July 20 – 22, 2000

In glorious sunshine, the first Pflasterspektakel of the new millennium went down in the record books as a truly historic landmark among urban cultural events: 550 entertainers from 30 countries on all five continents, including the world’s best from the international street art scene, turned Linz into the most colorful open air arena in Europe. Conservative estimates put the number of visitors thronging the streets from 2 p.m. till late at night at over 250,000. For the first time, a so-called “Pflaster Nightline” was staged in the Spektakel Tent on Arenaplatz from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. and featured music, mime and more for all those who had not had enough during the day. Innovations like this were often the result of the annual feedback sessions with the artistes. The model for the Nightline idea was the open stage in the Alte Welt bar where entertainers would meet for jam sessions from Friday night to Saturday morning. For the first time, the trams on Landstraße were replaced by buses from 6 p.m., and from as early as 4 p.m. on Saturday, to allow the performers the run of the street.

And not only that:
Any spectators who fancied themselves as street entertainers could try their hand at juggling, acrobatics, mime and drumming at specially organized workshops.
